WHAT DOES THE DAY INVOLVE?
In this class we will explore the techniques of creating a wax master for a signet style ring. Using traditional wax carving techniques you will learn how to carve a ring of your own design to a professional standard, to a specific finger size and the correct dimensions to allow for shrinkage in casting and clean up and finishing.
The signet rings can be any shape you desire and embellished with engraved or carved details.
Once the rings have been created during your time with us, you will be able to get them cast. We will guide you through the casting process talking about both how lost wax casting is used in the jewellery industry, and how to set up an account with a professional casting company.
Please come to the course with some rough drawings of your ideas (they don’t need to be perfect, you do not have to be a skilled artist, however it will assist you with your initial design plans).
This is a fantastic opportunity to experiment with a fantastic versatile carving material that has been a mainstay of the jewellery design industry for over 500 years.
Please note, this is a wax carving course, you will be sending your own wax off to then be processed into a metal of your choice. This will then need polishing and if you require a stone setting, you can outsource this or set your own stones. The focus for this course is to learn how to carve the wax, mark it out and apply any decorative features to help allow you to develop your wax carving skills.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Some basic jewellery making experience would be an advantage to allow you to polish your cast ring after your course.
