WHAT DOES THE DAY INVOLVE?
So you think you can make a ring?
A simple case of purchasing some wire, prepping yours ends, bending it up, soldering it together and shaping, and it’s complete?
But what if the customer wants something a bit different? Perhaps they require a reverse D band 8 x 1.8, size W or a trapezoid profile 3 x 2 mm, size J? How would you make these shapes by hand? How do you calculate the amount of metal you need to buy?
In this class we are going to look at how to make unusual shaped bands from scratch using nothing but 6 x 6 mm square silver stock.
You will work in pairs, with each of you acting as the customer for the other, with an order for a ring. As well as posing as a customer for your partner, you will also be the maker, and work to create their chosen ring design request to their exact specifications.
This means you will take your customers/partners order working out the exact volume of metal you need, then using the rolling mill to roll out the metal to the exact portions and size needed before bending up, fitting, soldering finishing and polishing to a high level.
The ultimate test is does it fit and is the customer satisfied?
Creating rings from stock metal to order the method in which most handmade wedding bands are created in professional workshops and requires specialist knowledge and skills particularly in using the rolling mills to make profiles to exact sizes and dimensions.
In this class we aim to make the making of any size and shape of ring manageable and achievable.
Under expert supervision you will learn to use a rolling mill to shape the silver stock to your needs and finish the resulting rings to a professional standard.
By the end of the day every student will have a different finished ring all made from the same piece of 6 x 6 mm stock silver, along with the skills and confidence needed to tackle future shaped ring requests.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Students should have some workshop experience and be confident using normal jewellery tools and equipment.
If you are unsure, please email us at hello@workshop925.com to discuss any queries, we are always here to help.
We will be using the rolling mills so you must be happy to use equipment under supervision.
***Note this class is not suitable for those wishing to make the rings for their own wedding***
